Ishigaki is home to some of the richest marine life in Japan. Located within the Yaeyama coral reef system, the island’s clear waters and healthy reef formations create ideal conditions for underwater biodiversity.
Most of Ishigaki’s reefs are dominated by hard corals, which build the solid reef structures that support the entire ecosystem. These coral formations create natural habitats for hundreds of species of tropical fish and marine animals.
While snorkeling above these coral gardens, you may encounter butterflyfish, parrotfish, clownfish, angelfish, surgeonfish, and triggerfish weaving between the reef. Large schools of fish often move together across the coral slopes, creating constantly changing underwater scenes.
Green sea turtles are one of the most special highlights of Ishigaki marine life. They are often seen resting calmly on the coral along the reef. If we are lucky, you may watch a turtle slowly rise to the surface for air — and that moment sometimes allows us to observe them much closer before they gently return to the reef.
Depending on the season, you might also spot reef sharks, rays, squid, mackerel, tuna, or even giant cuttlefish during their unique mating displays. Every snorkeling tour is different.
We choose the snorkeling location each day based on sea and weather conditions to access the healthiest reef areas with the best visibility. All snorkeling is done directly from the shore, allowing a relaxed pace and more time exploring the reef.
This amazing underwater world is delicate. Coral reefs grow slowly and can be harmed easily. That’s why we follow responsible snorkeling practices — and ask you to do the same:
✓ Don’t touch the reef or marine animals– Coral is alive and breaks easily.
✓ Float gently above the reef – Never stand or kick your fins against coral.
✓ Keep a respectful distance – Give fish, turtles, and other sea life their space.
✓ Leave everything in the ocean – Shells, rocks, and sea creatures belong in the sea.
✓ Use reef-safe sunscreen – Ordinary sunscreen can harm coral. Choose reef-friendly options.
Yes, this tour is designed with beginners in mind.
We start with a safety briefing and a short how-to-snorkel lesson if needed, then enter the water gently from the beach — no jumping from boats.
Life jackets are available (mandatory) for extra confidence in the water, and our guide stays close throughout the session.
Most guests who have never snorkeled before feel comfortable within the first 10 minutes.
No. All of our Ishigaki snorkeling tours use beach entry only.
This means you walk into the water from the sand, which is easier, more comfortable, and eliminates any risk of seasickness.
Beach entry also lets us access shallower reef areas that boats cannot reach, which often means better visibility and more marine life at accessible depths.
Ishigaki's reefs are home to a wide variety of marine life year-round.
On most tours we encounter green sea turtles resting on or swimming around the reef, as well as parrotfish, butterflyfish, surgeonfish, and large schools of tropical fish.
Depending on the season, guests may also spot white-tip reef sharks in shallow water, giant cuttlefish, stingrays, and lionfish. Every tour is different, which is part of what makes each session memorable.
We keep groups small with max of up to 7 people per guide (normally much less) to provide a relaxed and personal experience.
